COURTHOUSE >> A group of thirty exchange students from Montella, Italy, came to the Montgomery County Courthouse on Monday as a part of the sister cities exchange program run with the Norristown Area School District. The sheriff’s department personnel led the group of exchange students around the courthouse. measures, explaining what kind of defenses he has against unruly defendants who appear in Montgomery County court. He even put one student in cuffs and posed for a picture for the student’s father in Italy.
The exchange students’ visit to the courthouse concluded early Monday afternoon posing for pictures with District Attorney Risa Ferman, commissioners’ Chairman Josh Shapiro, Sheriff Russell Bono and Chief Deputy Sheriff Willie Richet.
“I am pleased to welcome the students from Montello, Italy--Norristown’s Sister City. This program fosters learning and collaboration and is a great chance for us to showcase our fantastic county and county seat,” Shapiro said on Monday.
The students and teachers left around noon to go to class at Norristown Area High School before having a late lunch on Monday.
Jim Serratore, the president of the Norristown-Montella Sister Cities program, said his daughter took part in the program in 2000 and that it has helped her in college and in her career.
He also said Norristown has significant ties with Montella and several Italian immigrants that came to Norristown were born in Montella.
Michele Delligatti, a teacher in Montella who has been coming to Norristown on the trips since 1995 said it’s good for the students to come to Norristown and since participating in the program, a few have come back to the U.S.
Delligatti said having the Italian students come to Norristown helps them with their English, gives them a chance to understand American culture and helps to create opportunities for the future. He said past students who have come back have become doctors, teachers and said one is the CEO of a company in the United States.
He also explained the teachers that come as chaperones come away with different methods of teaching.
Bono also said it is a good opportunity for all involved.
“I think it’s very good for the kinds to come to the United States of America to help them learn our culture; see how our country works in particular with Montgomery County. There’s a large Italian population in Montgomery County; many of them from the town of Montella where these students are from,” Bono said on Monday.
Bono also stressed the importance of students in the Norristown Area School District taking part in the program. The Norristown Area High School students in the program will travel to Italy next year.
“Next year our kids from Norristown will be able to have the opportunity to go to Montella and experience their culture. It’s a great thing. It can only make the word a better place where everybody understands that while we may be a little different, we’re really all the same,” Bono said.
The group of students and teachers from Montella landed in the U.S. on March 26 and will return home on April 10. While in the area, the students stay at the homes of a Norristown Area High School student. Next year Norristown Area High School Students will go to Montella and stay with the Italian families.
The student exchange program between the sister cities began in 1995 in the Norristown Area School District.
